Michael Copland, Child Protection AoR Coordinator

Michael Copland has been working in humanitarian affairs and child protection for more than 20 years, having started his career as a child protection Social Worker in the United Kingdom and Australia.  He has worked extensively in field emergency settings across the globe including postings in Timor Leste, Sri Lanka, Uganda and Lebanon for the UN and INGO’s.  He holds an undergraduate degree in Social Work and a Masters in International law from the University of Melbourne.  For the last four years Michael held the position of Child Protection in Emergencies Specialist for UNICEF regional office Eastern and Southern Africa.  You can reach him at:

Bilal Sougou, Child Protection AoR Deputy Coordinator

Bilal Sougou has successfully completed a Masters in Child Studies/Psychology in the United Kingdom (upper second level, and winner of the Dean’s price and the Best Alumni in 2011). He has extensive work experience (over 12 years) in humanitarian, recovery and development field in the area of Child Protection, Gender Based Violence, Disaster Risks Reduction/Education. Bilal has worked with INGOs (ASB, CESVI) in Uganda, Haiti, Somali and Kenya and joined UNICEF 4 years ago. First, he was seconded by NRC to UNICEF Niger as CPiE specialist, Protection cluster and CPWG Coordinator; later, he was contracted by UNICEF as CP specialist and CPWG coordinator in Mauritania and, more recently, in Cameroon, responding to the Nigerian crisis. Sara Lim Bertrand, Help Desk for Field-based Child Protection Coordination Groups

Sara Lim Bertrand is the helpdesk, providing remote support through a query service, CPIE communities of practice, the CP AoR resource repository and capacity building initiatives. Sara brings 16 years of relevant experience to this role, including programming experience in CP, GBV and education in emergencies. She has worked in a variety of humanitarian and development contexts with UN agencies and NGOs. You can reach her at
